So, it was brought to my attention that Nazia Iqbal is leaving music and will be pursuing a much more lucrative business adventure, religion! YES! She plans to open her own madrassa (as if there is any shortage of that in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa). In due time, Nazia Iqbal will be joining the ranks of Junaid Jamshaid, Ali Hairdar , Shaheenshah Bacha, etc … Think of it this way: music is a good way to make money and once the bank accounts are full, it’s good to abjure with all that money and walk the holy path. Someday dear Nazia will compete with Mualana Falzal ur Rehman aka Maulana Diesel. Way to go, Nazia!
Anyway, that’s all about her new embarking, but nevertheless Nazia has played a major role in Pakhtu music, whether positive or negative, which is up for debate. Last year, a friend and I were scanning some local English music channels; we got Rihanna’s songs on three channels in a row, to which my friend said:
“Fuck! Another Rihanna’s song? Mara dey nah kho hagha Nazia Iqbal kha dah, nor sah na nu pa sandare baandhey kas tah khanda rashee” (Nazia Iqbal is better, if anything, at least her songs are a good source of humour.)
While most people I know despise her for her choice of songs/poetry and singing style, I must add that there are songs of hers that I like… My personal favourite from her VERY VAST collection are:
“zah yum thagey zmaka, tah mey asmaan wai wai, yara pa ma da meene wokrah baran wai wai”
“che takaNRa gharma we, tah gul zah wagma wey”
“aale kana”
“da sitham dak sanama”
So, yes there will be neither “aaaoo kanaaa” in her melodious songs nor anymore sobbing while grieving a beloved’s separation…
aao kana to na kana wa nice to read as it was short and to the point ! but the question is about the point …i have had the honor to get a good few laughs at some of her performances too… as u mentioned some because of her style and some because of the gollaaaapi pukhto poetry she sang ! … but the intentions or neeyah with which she has arrived at the point of Na kana is in her heart and no one else but her and her Creator would know ! so we can’t be really judgmental … we should spare her for the good she is said to be pursuing …that too is news to me from your article though ! so wishing Nazia Iqbal a successful career in the Madrassa and with her Lord as well Ameen…. abaad osaey
Hahah! I actually laughed out loud at this – probably because I have been a victim of Nazia Iqbal’s music in more than just one wedding.
